All the concepts which surround DevOps are not new. But using all of them together in IT it is. Some people say many of these points seem obvious, but the lack of these obvious, common-sense concepts is the root cause for which most IT projects experience delays, don’t meet expectations, or just fail.
DevOps is a culture, a set of processes and tools to improve the performance and health of IT organizations or departments. Our top two priorities are communication and collaboration. We can mention dozens of examples from our past projects where we saw problems because those two basic and obvious things were missing. For us, beginning some time ago, communication and collaboration is a strategy. It’s what we emphasize with all our clients.
Our experience in the IT world is in the infrastructure side. We’ve been providing consulting as system administrators (or sysadmins), and we think that our profession has definitely changed. It’s not possible to manage the infrastructure in the same way we did in the past. The new demands and dynamic nature of the business world, the new volumes of users and data are impossible to administer it in the traditional way. The new sysadmins require a new set of skills, and have become what we love to call: Infrastructure Developers.
